TikTok Content Creators Fueling Parallel Market for Unlicensed Weight-Loss Drug
An underground market for unlicensed weight-loss drugs is propelled by social media fitness personalities and sellers on messaging platforms, based on new investigations.
Investigational Drug Acquiring Popularity Online
Retatrutide, which remains in clinical trials, is being promoted by online personalities for its alleged fat-burning properties. Viewers are urged to contact these accounts directly for supplier links, while also receiving promotional offers.
Thriving Commerce on Social Networks
Additionally, a robust market exists on messaging services, where groups with thousands of participants share “before and after” photos, injection guides and claims of rapid British shipping. Sellers market the substance there before redirecting customers to other platforms for transactions.
Understanding The Experimental Drug
Retatrutide is an investigational injectable created by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The drug targets three gut hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, GIP and glucagon. Preliminary studies indicate it could assist patients lose up to a quarter of their total weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the substance is being hailed online as the successor to Ozempic.
Healthcare Professionals Express Concerns
However, physicians and chemists have cautions that the sale of what is still an unapproved drug in the UK is a cause for concern and could lead to users injecting substances of unknown origin.
Several experts said the demand for the experimental drug could be connected to the increasing price of approved slimming products such as Mounjaro.
Legal Status and Implementation
Selling the unapproved drug on social media or messaging apps is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unapproved drug that cannot be marketed or distributed for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.
Some content creators attempt to circumvent the rules by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a restricted substance, but promotion and supply can still violate medicines, marketing, and consumer regulations, risking penalties, legal action or prison.
Platform Response and Material Removal
According to TikTok, the service has removed violative content and prohibited related keywords and search suggestions. The company stated it was dedicated to keeping the service secure and allocating resources in enhancing enforcement strategies.
Online Marketplace Activities
Investigations also found groups with up to nine thousand participants selling retatrutide using Telegram's built-in discovery tool, which operates like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” immediately brings up channels with thousands of users, filled with images of slimming results, positive reviews and detailed instructions for mixing or injecting at residence.
Within minutes of entering one group, a seller posted contact information, where most transactions take place. The vendor provided an guidebook and promised delivery within two days. When asked whether the substance was authentic, one seller said: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a photo of a alleged laboratory certificate. Not one asked about body mass, health issues or previous experience.
Product Details and Costs
Inside these groups, posts display dark colored parcels with postal service labels, claiming to contain fresh supplies. One communication stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Buyers can select between powder vials, prepared at home with sterile water, or ready-to-use pens typically priced at 160 pounds for 20mg. When asked how long a pen should last, vendors give contradictory responses varying between a several days to “depends on your body”.
Platform Moderation and Security Measures
A representative for the messaging service said it regularly monitored dangerous content on its platform including material that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Medical Professional Cautions
“People are injecting substances they can’t verify. Even if the science behind retatrutide is valid, these online versions may not contain what they claim,” stated a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmacy at Chemist4U.
Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service linked the surge in demand to recent cost increases for approved slimming drugs such as Mounjaro. “With prices increasing, patients are turning to online platforms. But counterfeit injections are extremely risky. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the environment they were produced in was clean,” she explained.
Her team has already encountered individuals harmed by personal administration from unverified suppliers. “We recognize the frustration, but purchasing from messaging apps or communication platforms is gambling with your health,” said Wyllie. “These materials could be contaminated or incorrectly dosed.”
Producer Position
A representative from the pharmaceutical company said retatrutide was in third stage clinical trials and had not been reviewed or authorized by any regulatory agency globally. “Therefore at this point no one can market [it] for human use,” they said, noting that any item “falsely representing itself as a company experimental substance not yet approved … may subject users to possibly significant medical dangers”.
