Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology This Season.
The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.
Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Athletes will gain the option to contest certain decisions from the chair umpire, mirroring the system currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
The new system will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This development arrives only a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to review other decisions, including:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Possible hindrance end of a point.
Notably, there is no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.
Case in Point
An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, granting the point to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
A further innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.
In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
